I've always worked in an environment where web-based apps were only used by external customers who were only allowed access to their data. Pretty much no views needed for that.
In-house coworkers used the client. Managers loved views as a form of drill-down reports. They would have hated any web version that I can picture.
I'm sure XPages would make it easier somehow (look it's a floor wax AND a dessert topping!) but I'll wait and see what the XPages gurus say.
