My greatgranddad picked it up in China around 1900, and he'd only survived that trip by about a dozen years, dying way before his time and leaving behind his orphaned children.
I often wonder what my grandfather and his sisters might have been spared, if their dad had lived longer.-
BTW, I just read that here in Germany populations of malaria-transmitting moskitoes ("Stechmücken") have been found to be increasing. Plus we just imported some kind of deadly brand new pneumonia. Hooray for globalization!
