I haven't used xpages yet but I am working on a technique for running fully integrated ajax apps inside the Notes client without running http.
I have a working prototype that uses the Adobe Spry framework to format the results (returned as xml) of an FTSearch that Spry then converts to an html table. The application is on a tab inside the Notes client (developed in v7.03 and tested in 8.5) and from a user perspective is just part of the application.
This approach should work with any ajax libraries, as well as Adobe Flex and Silverlight).
I still have some kinks to work out but things look promising and will provide a lot of choice for developers.
