I really hate applets because I always have different VMs on my ordinateur. Take a look at the webadmin.nsf (the newer version the better), it really looks pretty much the same in the browser like it does in the admin client and afaik it uses no java (I didn't open it in the designer yet) but Javascript and maybe DHTML.
