@Jake: yes, screen readers like JAWS have been working to add support for the new Web 2.0 technologies as they become more prevalent.
@Cass: The WCAG 1.0 standard that you refer to was published 10 years ago in 1999. There is a newer WCAG 2.0 standard that is available that is more in tune with advances in Web technologies. You can also read up further on Web Accessibility Myths around the use of Javascript here...(see Myth 4)
