After many hours of hair pulling I finally found the problem!!
The SMTP settings document in the App needed the *real* address of our SMTP server. Not the address our Admin guys swear by! ;) Fancy that!!
Thanks for the help anyway. I might sit on advice from our Admin giys a bit longer next time before screaming for help.
