I actually learned (what you call) SMS-Speak from IRC channels, Which existed long before SMS in Mobile phones. Instant Messaging is really only a nicer form of IRC.
So I think IRC-speak is Ok for IM and SMS but I draw the line there. I would never use IRC-speak in emails or Comments to Blogs. Hear w0t I hv 2 say, I m yy.
