I think that part of your euphoria is because of the past frustrations you had with domino hacks and the level of detail required with LAMP work. MS has always had some of the best development tools so moving in their direction would always be a step up.
I think though that if you had ventured into ASP.NET in its formative years your reactions would have been different. Especially when they brought out new versions.
That being said, this is one area where IBM really need to improve.
