Before I go to bed I wanted to thank you all for the input. I've been reading it all as it came in and have been taking it in.
I think I'm just about sold on XPages now. Enough to want to spend some time getting to know them in detail. I need to do that before I can decide exactly where they fit in my bag of tools.
The only comment from above that I want to respond to for now is that "pretty much anything that was Domino Web development before XPages is in support mode". I guess that should concern me but, as I think about it, nothing's changed for so long now that it doesn't at all. My toolbag has had so little added to it over recent years that I don't think I'd really notice.
