Some Domino site (Blogsphere) render their output in an agent. A lot of sites have QueryOpenAgents. Using XPages "agent style" that can be MUCH faster especially when you add some caching logic. for "mostly read only" sites you don't need all the Ajax and Dojo goodness.
So the answer: Yes I would use XPages and yes I would think hard which of the features to use. And YES: the backend (CMS UI) would be XPages in any case so it runs in a client too
