I'd go with the pub. All you have to do nowadays is serve good grub and you can't lose.
Or you do as friends of ours did and buy a struggling pub/hotel and turn it in to a group holiday let (that happens to have its own working bar) http://www.peakhotel.co.uk/ They're on to a real winner and inundated with bookings. As they are the other group holiday lets they own (it's like they're playing Monopoly over in Derbyshire -- got the cottages and a pub, so they then bought a hotel).
It's another avenue I'd consider following if I had enough capitol to put down.
