You can sign up for a free account, but they do send a lot of emails reminding you to use the service, but there's a nice feature to show how your emails look in all the major mail clients: http://www.campaignmonitor.com/testing/
We're trying to send a php generated barcode (duplicated on the confirmation page of the site) in the hope that they either print the page or the email and bring it along with them for faster registration. I'll let you know how successful we are.
