No Longer So Desperate

Following up on last Friday's plea for help in finding work I'm happy to report things now appear a little rosier. Or at least I feel a bit better about the short-term future.

I got two things out of the exercise. First of all I got a few leads. Leads are good. They don't always turn in to business (whether that's my fault or not I don't know), but they're always good to have.

While leads help with the short term, the other thing I got out of it was ideas for the long-term way forward. Initially this will involve working on my LinkedIn profile and a major re-write of my company website. The company site needs to better reflect what I do. It needs more case studies adding.

I also plan on dropping the "we" and "us" aspect of the website. It will become a lot more open and obvious that it's just a man in his garage. I'm not ashamed of this and if potential customers don't like it then it's better they know upfront.

Long term I plan on networking more. On the social websites as well as in person. Hanging out in more online groups. Answering questions if I can. Attending more events. Etc.

The old business model I had of blogging on here and waiting for it to generate business is now a thing of the past. I'll continue blogging. I just won't expect it to bring me the work, like it used it.

Thanks to all who have helped out and offered advice so far! it's been very helpful. I now have a fresh spring in my step and a revitalised mojo.

  1. Glad to hear things aren't so dire anymore. Networking is most decidedly the way to go, whether it be in person at conferences/user groups or online communities & sites like linkedin.

I've been slacking in the conference space lately, but I think there's a lot of opportunities that can arise (and usually free entry) if you can come up with topics to speak about. Initially it was a great way to get my name out there and if I wasn't so slammed I would love to continue giving presentations whenever possible.

  2. Pleased to hear you've got your Mojo back. I/the company I work for need to be more social, hope to see you at some events

Good to hear you're bouncing back. I've written a recommendation on your LinkedIn profile. Every bit helps...

Reading this reminded me of a recent excerpt on signal vs. noise -

"Spinfree had a dirty little secret: It wasn’t really a “company.” It was just me…[But] when describing Spinfree, I always spoke in terms of we, us, the team, or our offices. I trained myself always to use the collective first person—on the phone while pitching to potential clients, on Spinfree’s website, in the proposals I submitted…Why the bluffing? I was young and inexperienced and felt like people would not take Spinfree seriously if they knew that it was just me…I wish I knew then what I know now: Being small is nothing to be insecure or ashamed about. Small is great. Small is independence. Small is opportunity. Celebrate it. Don’t hide from it."

Oooh, like the new web site design, very nice. I like the uncluttered approach.

It's not a new site. Been there for *exactly* as it is for years now.

I think I worded it badly. I was saying I'm planning on an overhaul of the site. Content-wise that is.

Glad you like it though ;-)

BTW: Sorry I've been quite on Words with Friends. Nothing personal. I just stopped playing it. Took up too much time. Oh, and I kept losing all the time!

  3. Like the new website and good to hear you are back on the job so to speak.
