Flex 4 Launched Today. Still Called Flex. Kind Of.

Until now, in order to create a Flex application you would use Flex Builder. Now that version 4 of Flex is out you'll soon be building Flex apps with Flash Builder. The name change is to "streamline product choice" or something. Personally I don't like the use of the word Flash in the app's name as I still like to kid myself that Flex is nothing to do with Flash. Yeah, right.

Either way it's exciting to see so many new features available to play with. I've ordered my upgrade already and plan on giving it some more attention once it arrives. Once I do I'll be bound to filter through what I learn.

For now, if you're interested in what's new then read here or here or here or here.

I've been in the pre-release program for Builder and there's definitely a lot of nice new features in the IDE.

I've also been using the Flex 4 Beta for a client project recently, and the work they've done on separating component appearance from functionality is pretty neat. It takes a bit of getting used to coming from Flex 3 components, but once you get your head around how it all works it's so much neater.

  1. Jake,

I agree when they announced that version 4 was going to be Flash Builder I did like it because it will confuse the market.

  2. Yes, they should give it a name that more closely aligns it with the product's function. Something like 'Domino' perhaps. I'm just wading through your Flex Basics articles now. Hopefully version 4.0 won't make that work obsolete!
