First Wedding Anniversary -- Photos

Today is a special day in the Howlett household as it's a year since Karen and I tied the knot. It's also the day we go to the doctors for Felix's 16 week injection. It doesn't take a mathmagician to work out it wasn't the traditional way of doing things and I have no shame in admitting it.

It's all too easy in these modern times not to bother getting married at all and for a time I might have said myself that I don't see the point in it. Now though I really do. Being married is great. The ring on my finger is a source of pride, as is my wife. It feels good being married and I've enjoyed the last year lots. Even though I'm only just getting used to saying "my wife" without it feeling a bit weird. Better than "my partner" though!

Last year I joked (to myself, as you do) that it would probably be our first anniversary by the time I got any photos of the big day online. Never thought it actually would be though! How time flies.

So, here are a selection of photos from our wedding and some from our honeymoon.

Here's to the next year. And the next. And the next. And...

  1. Congrats mate, I can clearly remember what my 1st anniversary was like, after all it was only 5 months ago. Doesn't time fly, couldn't believe a year had passed from the wedding day to that 1st anniversary. As you say, heres to the next one and the one after etc.

  2. It was our 10th anniversary last year, and I've never reretted getting married one bit. It's been great.

  3. Congratulations. It always bothers me when people say that marriage is a drag or you lose your freedom. I would not trade my wife for the world. It sounds like you have found a woman, and more importantly a perspective, which allows you to see how wonderful sharing your life with someone you love can be. Continue to cherish her and your family, as it sounds like you do, and you will have a long and happy life. God bless.

Just passed our first year anniversary 3 weeks ago. Time really does fly. =)

  4. Beautiful photos! Loved(!) that necklace Karen wore. And that hotel room looked lovely. Thanks for sharing the photos, Jake, and congratulations and Happy Anniversary to you both.

  5. Great wedding pics. Grew your hair out a bit for the big day? ;-) I'm glad you two tied the knot and that you are realizing the benefits of it. Too bad more people don't - maybe some will take encouragement from your happiness!

A friend of my wife's in Sweden recently had her first child and let us know they were skipping the wedding as the tax structure apparently penalizes a bit for being married. Not sure if that's criminal on the part of the state or not... sad to be sure.

It'll be 8 years for us this June. Indeed - time does fly. I feel like we passed a major milestone... you hear about the 7 year itch and at some point I figured that a marriage that survives the first 18 months (break-in period), the first 7 years and the first visit from the police for actions of your offspring is a marriage set in stone. :-) God willing my girls will grow up right and avoid putting us through the last one.

Our small cul-de-sac has 20 houses on it. Of the six houses that are young families with "2.4 children" only three are married couples.

  6. Demographics are always interesting to compare.

Our neighborhood here in the US, rural Ohio, has also about 20 homes. One is like yours, second marriage, daughter from first - married after partnering up for a while (my dental hygienist as it happens). One is unmarried with children from two other relationships/marriages. 10 are married with children and the rest are married without children. Three of those because they can not have children (seems high to me), that I know of and one has chosen not to yet. The remaining handful are single adult home owners of which one is a widower with three children, one a widow with none.

Marriage is yet culturally the norm in the US at this stage though cohabitation is not stigmatized as it once was.

  7. Congrats, Jake!

I LOVE being married, and so does Matt. I am in total agreement with you about pride. I love the fact that I hold my head up tall knowing that *I* get to be the lucky girl that has the other half of Matt's ring.

Getting married is the single thing I've done in my life that improved it the most.

    And we work to make it better all the time. Check out ACME (The Association for Couples in Marriage Enrichment) {Link}

We're coming up on 23 years. Congratulations.

My god! How much does Jerry know about the people in his street. An exchange of Christmas cards to 1 or 2 is about as much as I could handle. As soon as they figure out you work in IT, free consultation is expected every time the CD drive jams!

    Congrate to ya anyhow Jake.

  8. Congrats to both of us, mate! My 25th is today!

  9. Nice!

I agree re the pride thing and before we tied the knot, I never really wanted to get married - never saw the point in it. I hated picking my ring and thinking about wearing it...now I feel naked if I'm not wearing it.

Charlotte and I have been married for 12 weeks on Sunday and I'd say life has never been so grand!

Congrats... finally getting married myself in July, although we've been together over 18 years already!

Best of luck for the future....
