Version 6, One Year On

If I had to guess how old this current incarnation of CodeStore was I'd probably have said about 6 months if I hadn't noticed recently that it was a year old and due its first birthday today. How time flies.

I don't know about you, but I'm still happy with this look and I don't plan on changing it any time soon. Still, like any site, it's always in need of a little house-keeping and needs to stay up to date. Today I was hoping to release v6.3 but I have a few bugs I need to resolve first.

I've got the house to myself this weekend and I'm in two threes minds about what to do. Do I:

  1. Catch up with friends, spending most of both nights in pubs and the daytime recovering.
  2. Work on the house and get loads of unfinished jobs ticked off the to-do list.
  3. Have a real geek-out, take the phone off the hook and lock myself in the office. This way I can get loads of things done - bug fixes, finish off half-written articles etc.

Or I could be sensible about number 1 and combine it with either 2 or 3 or a bit of both. Experience tells me that's unlikely to happen tough.

I guess it's in your interest that I opt for #3. This is actually the one I'd enjoy the most. Sad as it might sound I love having a whole weekend to spend with the PC and not having to feel guilty about not working on paying clients' projects. It's amazing how much you can get done. I've been known to have 12 hour sessions at the PC. It's a great chance to read all the unread RSS feeds and play with new ideas. Who knows what might come out the other end. I'll let you know on Monday. Unless I end up down the boozer that is...

  1. Jake,

Combine #3 with #1, get a crate in!!! Coding drunk may not alway work, however some of the ideas you end up coming up whilst 'plastered' are usually off the wall.

Sounds crazy, but it's true Graham. On previous weekend-alone--geek-fests I've been known to get through two bottles of red in one night while coding away. It can get hazy towards the end though - waking up the next day to check the browser's history to see what you were up to. Not big or clever. I don't tend to drink alone now though (first step to an alcohol-free life) or if I do I don't get drunk.

I've got half a keg in the garage left over from my birthday party next weekend, so I could actually bring the pub into the study. It's all very civilised!

  2. Jake,

From what I remember, you are much more likely to start #1 with good intentions then wake up sometime on Monday wondering what happened.

If you're not sure you want to do #1, then you should do #1. I always remember that nights out I didn't really fancy going on turned out to be the best ones.

Plus you can (a) pretend to not be a geek (myself included in this category :) and (b) that you're still young, free and single, not tied down "doing DIY" because the missus wants you to. (again, myself included!!)

Besides, if you're friends are around it's good to catch up. You never know when you'll be able to next time.

Unpleasant as this may sound. Do option 2. Things around the house are the equivalent of coding jobs that you "just haven't got around to sorting". The only difference is that its only you that knows the coding that needs doing, but you have two other people who are more than happy to point out what needs doing around the house.

Get them out of the way and you can do whatever else you like without having to explain how interesting 12 hours of coding actually is...

  3. I have a tip for your next redesign: I want to be able to drag and drop all components on your page like it is done in IBM Workplace Services :-) But it has to be faster and more stable...

The design still is very nice, don't change too often.

There is no choice. Its beer all the way.

  4. Its because you write such beautifully crafted, easy to understand articles that the rest of us can go to the pub.

I want articles, but when you pop those clogs, do you want us all to say "fanx ta'ra", or do you want some blurred, drunken, happy memory?

    Its Friday Jake. Live life.

Bonus points for anyone who identifies the album/CD/MP3 (Anyone can use Google!).

  5. 1. Nothing to show for it after.

    2. Something to show but so what.

    3. Moves the ball forward. You'll learn new things and have endless opportunities to be creative.

  6. Whatever you do, I'm sure it'll be worthwhile. Whether you're coding, drinking, or using the new mitre saw, make sure you're enjoying yourself. To me it's rare that we get that precious alone time to do whatever the heck we want. So, use it as you please. Be careful out there and have a great weekend.

  7. Drink!

I can't believe that was 12 months ago either - time really does fly...
