What is it with men and collections?
Today's my dad's birthday (Happy birthday dad!). For a present I bought him Men and Collections to go with the copy of Men and Sheds that my brother bought him for Christmas. As my dad wryly noted on the phone earlier, he now has a collection of these books as well. Not half as big as the amazing collection of wood-working planes he keeps, rather aptly, in his shed. He loves his shed. Here he is finishing off the new door he made for it. Even the door handle itself is noteworthy.
Living with Karen I don't have the luxury of a shed. Instead I have the modern-day equivalent of a shed - the home-office/computer-room. How many of us have been nagged at about the amount of time we spend in our computer rooms whilst we're at home!? Just as older men use their sheds to escape things, we use our computer rooms.
Something I've never talked about on this site (probably to retain what professional dignity I still have) is my collection of chocolate bar wrappers. Just as long and boring as the collection itself is the story of why on earth I ever had this collection. I won't bore you with that. Instead I'll let you in on the archived copies of tuckshop.net that remain.
The first version dates back to 1998. What's embarrassing is looking at the things I was doing back then. Visitor counters and messages about the page being "Best viewed full-screen in a R4.x browser"! What was I thinking!! There's lots of DHTML too. In my defence I can only say that I was experimenting. The ideals I try to adopt today are based on lessons I've learnt in the past.
The collection itself was quite big but had to stop. It was getting silly. I would go to the local shop and scan the sweet counter for new bars or limited editions. Thankfully I have grown up a lot since then and hidden the lot of them in a box in the loft at my parent's house.

Not sure I'd call myself a connoisseur Robert. Just somebody with too much time on their hands.
If I had to I would pick the Galaxy range of chocolates as my favourites. Although I also like the Cadbury Caramel a lot too. And Fry's Chocoloate Creams. And Bournville. And....
Hmm, sheds cold, office warm.. good move!
My wife found a way to keep her foot in my computer room. She picked out the bookshelves and 'owns' the shelf space on two of the three. I still hide there frequently, mostly with a cup of tea if I'm up early enough for a proper breakfast, whenever I'm not working on a project around the house, and after dinner with a cup of tea if we're not watching something on the barf-o-vision (TV).
