Summer Projects
Having time off means I can finally get round to all the things I can never find the time for when I'm working. My two main goals for this summer are to get fit/lose some weight and sort my teeth out. Both of which I have made a start on. To get fit I am doing about 20 miles every other day on my bike and to sort my teeth out, last week I made my first visit to the dentist in about 3 years. Not wanting to confirm any English stereotypes certain countries may have, I have to point out I'm no Austin Powers. My teeth look fine when I smile and all fit together. They just need a lot of attention inside. Hence I have four more appointments spread over the next two months. Oh, and a trip to hospital to get one of the Wisdoms out. Oh, the joy.
Another project is to sort out the box of photos I have. It's a mess and contains at least a thousand photos, all jumbled up in no order whatsoever. Last week I bought myself a scanner and I've spent an hour or two each day scanning in photos. My goal is not only to have copies of them all, should I ever lose them, but also to find a photo of myself for each of the 28 years I've been around. This is made easy in the first part of my life because most photos that my mum took have the date hand-written on the back. As for my teens, it's a case of trying to guess when and where each photo was.
It's a long and boring job but it's also nice to go through them and see photos I've not seen for years. It reminds me what a great life I've had so far. Maybe I'll share some of them with you and the stories that each one tells. Here's a photo to start off with, from year 0, when I was 1 week old.
Tomorrow I am off to London to talk websites with a potential client. It's daft to think I can muck about all summer and not have to do some work to pay my way. Earning money obviously takes precedence over scanning photos. As should the up-keep of this site. I have some articles in draft at the moment. I also have a girlfriend with six weeks of holidays starting today. There really aren't enough hours in the day...

That's partly where I got my inspiration from. Mine won't be as exact as that is. I would love to do what they did when I get round to starting a family of my own. Amazing.

Just a comment on something that has slightly 'bugged' me on using you site - but please don't take it badly !
When I click on a link i.e. to look at the scanner you bought - can you get it to open in a separate window ? So that when I'm done looking at your scanner I can just close it'w window and I'm immediately back on your page where I was.
As an idea for you: I have an app where I want the user-entered URLs on a page/form to appear differently and open in a new window. But I can't change the overall base target for the page because my own links need to stay in the same window.
So, I wrap my user-content in a div, and have a small piece of script that loops thru all <a> tags within that div only, and changes the target and colour attribs.
Not the neatest solution - but it works !

you're asking Jake to break the No. 1 rule of web design? No way, I guess. This rule is as simple as: Don't break the back button.
90% of all users open their browsers in full screen mode anyway (I just hate it, but that's a fact). Many won't even notice that a new window has opend, so they get puzzled. Also, about 90% of all users know nothing about using a browser, except for that the back button will take them back to where they were before.
You want a link to open in a new tab (or window, if you are still using IE)? It's up to you, use the context menu.
John, if you want to open links in a new window there are keyboard shortcuts to let you do so. For example, in IE you hold shift down when you click a link.
For every person who wants links in a new window, there's a person who doesn't. The way it works now means you at least have the option...
That begs the question ... is there a way to ensure that a link opens in the same window ?
(I know it's lazy, but I'd rather ask the question than go and find out ... not had coffee yet :o)

In Mozilla browsers you can prevent the use of target="_blank". Like so: {Link}

Incidentally, I noticed that when using the "Shift"ed link technique I don't have to re-enter my firewall id password ... I wonder if this is a configurable setting on the firewall ?
The same option is present in Mozilla 1.4 as well (just type "about:config" in the address bar and hit enter). It's set to false by default and I'm not sure if it is really working , though. Will try it out the other day. Maybe ...
