Domino 6 Upgrade
It took me almost a year to start using Domino 6 but it looks like it's taking some of you guys even longer. In the last week or so I've had more than a few mails from people who've downloaded some of my recent templates only to be told they were an invalid NSF version. This folks is because I am using nothing but Domino 6 at the moment. Maybe it's about time some of you guys were too. I know that it's going to be a long time before business catches up but there's nothing stopping you downloading a copy. If you can't do it at work, do it at home. There's no excuse!
Talking of Domino 6 upgrades. A month has passed since I booked my upgrade exam. You know what it's like. You think a month is loads of time to get ready. Well, as ever, it's flown by and I've done nothing about preparing myself. Whether or not I need to I still like to know I am ready when I go to any exam. That's why I'll be spending most of today (and probably tonight) doing as much cramming as I can.
Tomorrow I will hopefully have two things for you: a) Some good news! b) A comprehensive resource for anybody thinking of doing the same. After I've done the exam I'll have a better feel for what's in it and I'll try and share as much as I can, along with some online resources I think will help. The exam's at 14:00 GMT tomorrow. Keep you fingers crossed for me. Now then, shall I wear my CLP lapel badge tomorrow or not....

Just in case some of your readers are not aware, to convert a R6 dB to R5 format simply make a new copy of the original with a file extension of .NS5
(Of course this is only possible if you already have R6 :-)
I'm looking forward to your thoughts and comments about the exam - I'll have to do it myself before the end of the year - no idea what has stopped me so far. Unpleasant memories from school probably. *winces*

Thanks for the info on NS5 Ian. I remember knowing about NS4 when R5 came out but hadn't put 2 and 2 together...

The reason others are getting the "invalid" error is that Domino 6, by default, locally encrypts all databases. This is a new default setting. You need disable local encryption in addition to specifying ".ns5"

First off, Good Luck in the exam tomorrow Jake. The R6 Admin upgrade was fairly easy. I'll look forward to seeing your thoughts on the exam.
Bob. You can turn off the default behaviour of encrypting local copies in your security settings. I think it's in the 'Notes Data' section.
If I had a Euro for every time I'd sent an ODS43 to an R5 using customer I'd have... ohh about 9 euro :-)

ps. Would you consider itroducing some section where we can share our experience with regards to exams that we as Domino developers/administrators have taken or will take.

Edwin, I'm not sure that's a good idea for codestore. It's probably better to have that kind of thing on the Notes forums.
I intend to keep codestore as it is. Nice and simple. Things get too complicated when you start adding bits and pieces all over the place.

For everyone else out there on the brink, if you pass your exam before August, you'll get TWO certs sent to you (one (P)CLP and a *new* IBM C(A)P one) -- now if that's not incentive enough for you ... you obviously are not a contractor ;o)

I've been paranoid about using the R6 client for R5 development, thus I switch between the two all the time, depending on the customer.
Any experiences, anecdotal or otherwise, that could make me feel a little better about using it for all work, regardless of database type?
My main worry is corruption of R5 db's by the R6 client.

You should be okay. As long as you disable Local Encryption and make sure you don't use any new features. I've not tried it but I remember the same thing when R5 came out and I used it to design with R4 servers.
Be wary though ;o)
It's not as easy for some of us to upgrade to R6 you know!!
The company I am working for has several remote servers which are operated by us but owned by companies which won't allow an upgrade to R6 without security audits.
They are all on seperate domains replicating with worldwide servers all running R5.
The cost, if not the time and effort is what will stop us for a long time yet.
Gaz. We talking about you upgrading to R6. Not your company. If you rest on yout laurels and wait for your company you will always be behind. Take the initiative yourself. Get and old PC and use it as your own server, at home if you have to. There really is no excuse.
