Better to leave widgets as-is

I know many will disagree, but...

For better usability, leave the widgets alone! Seriously, if the user (or
their company) chose [insert OS name here] let the widgets look like all the
other apps they are used to. Don't try to change them by adding all kinds of
CSS. If you do then they have to learn your widgets. I see developers do this
all the time - trying to be unique and creative. This is just annoying for
most end users.

There are plenty of ways to be creative other than to mess up their widgets.

This is the biggest problem I have with Netscape 6/Mozilla, but that's another
story.
