A Quick Notes Client Tip

A quick Notes Client tip for you. Not normally my thing but it's something I use quite a lot when testing/coding and it's little-known, AFAIK, so I thought I'd pass it on. And, hey, it's better than silence for another day. I'm busy at the moment so haven't the time for lengthy blog entries. Sorry. Back to normal soon. Promise.

Tip:

If you have a document selected in a view and you want to still have it selected when you switch to another view, simply hold down the Ctrl key while switching.

A couple of years ago now (damn, time flies!) I actually taught this to Mr Notes Tips himself!

Here's a tip I picked up recently which peeps might find handy. It might already be really well known, but I didn't know it so thought I would share!

Hold down Ctrl + Shift while opening a database, and any hidden views should be available in the view navigator.

You can also use Ctrl + Shift thingie when database is already open. Hold both keys down and go to View > Go To... in the menu. Now you can see all views. Another one with the same keys: hold down Ctrl + Shift when invoking LS debugger and you can enjoy formula debugger. Just keep in mind that it can crash your client as it is unsupported and unstable. I rarely, if ever, find it useful.

  1. While we're about it, let have a few more tips.

Ctrl-M creates a new Email message.

Whilst in the Workspace, the backward apostrophe (` - it's underneath the ESC key on a standard UK keyboard) will load up the earliest unread email.

Whilst in any text field, using Shift-F9 will perform a calculation (including @formulae) on anything you have typed. Such at 42*56 or @Propercase("wibble hatstands")

  2. Another few of my favourites are to do with the keypad and categories.

    + expands a category.

    - collapses a category.

    * expands a category and all sub documents.

Shift-+ expands all categories in a view.

Shift-- collapses all categories in a view.

I knew about Jake's tip but oddly enough never needed until this particular job where I couldn't perform a particular task without it.

    Try this...

  3. I must say this is quite handy. You can find this tip and lots more on Alan Lepofsky website.

  4. I like the shift + esc , which saves and closes the document.

Here's another shortcut that gives shortcuts

Holding down either of the ALT keys will display the ALT key shortcuts (Tooltips style) whether you're in Designer or the Notes client.

It could save you a mouse point and click for Action buttons that have no shortcut key defined. Experiment with it a few times and see what's available. It also works for bookmark folders when no db is selected.

One more thing..... if you do an ALT-Shift it makes the shortcut tips display remain until the ALT key is pressed again. That way you can look at them without leaning on the ALT key.

  5. Had to ask our users not to use the Ctrl Key Tip when moving from one view to another on a really big database, it seemed to take down the server on a fairly regular basis.

From the Notes client workspace, press the tilde key (~) to jump to the first unread mail message in your Inbox.

  6. _The_ tip I'd hate to do without is: Pressing shift-F9 within a text field (or numbers field) evaluates the formula.

Try it: go into notes, hit ctrl-m to open a mail message, go to the subject field, enter a formula like "@Prompt([ok]; "It Works!"; "Hello World")", and hit shift-F9.

    Nice for testing formulas.

Or... a little odd but something I do very often: When I work on a client from 8 to 9:30 in the morning, then again from 1 to 5 in the afternoon, minus a half hour of email, I can let Notes do the math, and type "-8+9.5-1+5-0.5" into our time & billing system, then hit shift-F9.
