Ben, you have access to the underlying servlet engine (ok, some stuff are not possible yet, but you can perfectly put your own servlets there, it's documented, supported, whatever your want !)
As for "buggy", I suspect you used very early versions cause we just went live with a production app on 852 server, a not trivial app (around 200 days of development), and we faced no bug at all ! We've done stress testing of this app and it scaled very well too...
