You're half way there. The problem is to do with Java.
Not only that but it's dependent on the Java version. It's only broken if you use a version of Java 6 later than Update 22 (or thereabouts).
The Java views are still in use. The customer I was debugging this for only encountered the issue now as they're planning a migration away from an XP/IE6 platform!!
I, personally, can sleep at night knowing I never blighted the web with the use of these Applets.
