textarea tag
In the context of a form tag, enables you to edit the value of multi-value and multi-line text items in a document using an HTML textarea control. Depending on the form's mode, generates a read-only value (in read mode) or a HTML textarea field (in edit mode) that automatically updates the item values in the current document. Use the richtext tag to retain the formatting of page text.

clientvalidate

If the clientvalidate attribute on the form tag containing this tag is set to true, indicates how client-side validation for the field represented by the textarea tag should be performed. Must be one of the following: onblur, onsubmit, or none. Default is onsubmit. Optional.

datatype

Specifies the type of item being added to a new document as well as the automatic validation being performed on the server. Must be one of the following:

Value	Description:
text	Does not validate or convert the value entered.
number	Validates or converts the value entered to a number.
date	Validates or converts the value entered to a date.
datetime	Validates or converts the value entered to a datetime field with the format: 10/02/99 10:10 PM.
readers	Does not validate or convert the value entered. Treats the item as a readers field.
authors	Does not validate or convert the value entered. Treats the item as an authors field.
names	Does not validate or convert the value entered. Treats the item as a names field.
richtext	Does not validate or convert the value entered.

Default is text. The tag tries to save the data as the data type specified but can be overridden by the document. Optional.

defaultformula

Enables you to supply the default value of the item using a Notes formula. If you supply a schema attribute for the form tag that contains this tag, the default value of the item in the referenced form takes precedence over the value derived using this formula. Optional.

defaultvalue

Default value for the item specified as a simple value. The string you supply is converted based on the datatype, locale, mveditseparator, and multivalue attribute values you supply. Supply default date values in ISO format, because the browser client's locale can change. If you supply a schema attribute for the form tag that contains this tag, the default value of the item in the referenced form takes precedence over the value specified in this attribute. Optional.

editformat

Format to use to display the text when the form is in edit mode or to display date-time and number values when the form is in display or read mode. If no editformat is supplied, the specifications in the format attribute are used.

format

Format to use to display the text when the form is in display or read mode, as specified by the keywords supplied. See

for a list of available formatting keywords. If no format is supplied, dates use the DATE TIME format and numbers use the NUMBER format. Text is turned into a string using the Java toString() method and is automatically escaped for HTML.

itemname

Name of the item in the document. Specify this attribute when the control and item names need to be different. Default is the control name. Optional.

locale

Locale to use to format the value and control the conversion of numbers and dates. If specified, overrides the locale that the browser specifies in the AcceptLang string. Use the following syntax: "<languageCode>_<countryCode>". See

for more details. By default, uses the first locale specified in the AcceptLang string for the browser.

multivalue

Boolean value. If true, indicates that the textarea field supports multiple values. The mveditseparator attribute defines what characters to use to separate multiple values in a multi-value field during data entry and the mvdisplayseparator attribute defines what characters to use to separate multiple values when the multi-value field is displayed. Default is false.

mvdisplayseparator

Indicates what character to use to separate multiple values when displaying a multiple value field in both read and edit mode. Must be one of the following: blank, comma, colon, semicolon. Default is semicolon.

mveditseparator

Indicates what character to use to separate multiple values in a multi-value field during data entry. Must be one or more of the following: blank, comma, colon, semicolon. To specify multiple separators, separate each with a comma. Default is comma, semicolon. If the value specified in the mvdisplayseparator attribute is not specified here as well, it is automatically added.

name

Name of the control on the Web page. Default is the value of the itemname attribute. Required.

timezone

Time zone to use to display the date. If you do not specify a value, defaults to the time zone of the server (not the browser). Optional.
